Getting your online up to speed

I once wrote a guide to speed dating (I know, but it was a living) which involved interviewing a life coach and relationship specialist on the most effective way to be attractive in a limited timeframe. This was many years ago when the phenomenon was still fairly new but it all jumped back to mind when I read the digital pulse top 4 tips on building trust with online customers.

What struck me was the similarity with the top tips I was taught for securing a mate in 5 minutes:

1) listen (people love talking about themselves),

2) listen actively (ask them questions about what they’ve told you),

3) don’t give too much of yourself away (keep them coming back for more – which means don’t just dribble off your family tree and cv, sounds silly but this is a common mistake) and

4) back away if they’re not interested (no stalking or begging).

A nice affirmation that this newfangled social networking thing is really the same online as it is in person – simple conversation skills go a long way.
